Guide
Start a car rental broker business. No fleet.
Most "start a car rental business" advice assumes you'll buy cars. Brokers don't. Here is the other path, step by step.
Can you start a car rental business without owning cars?
The short answerYes, as a broker. A broker sells rental cars owned by suppliers, under the broker's own brand, and earns the difference between the supplier's net rate and the selling price, or a commission. You need supplier agreements, clear pricing and cover wording, a way to take payments and a booking system.
The steps
- Pick a lane. One destination, one type of traveler. "US travelers renting in Australia" beats "everyone, everywhere".
- Set up the business. Company, bank account, insurance and any local licensing. Rules differ by country and state, so check locally with a professional.
- Find suppliers. Approach rental companies in your destination, ideally ones with a way to share rates electronically. Expect questions about volume and how you'll sell.
- Agree the terms. Net rates or commission, payment timing, cancellation rules and what cover is included.
- Decide how you price. Your margin rules, currencies and how you show cover. See margin rules.
- Choose your technology. Day one you need a booking site, supplier connection, payments and a place to manage bookings. See the comparison.
- Write clear terms. What's included, deposits, fuel, age rules and the deductible or excess, in plain words.
- Win your first customers. Content that answers real questions, travel partners, and a few careful ad tests.
Affiliate or broker first?
An affiliate link is the quickest way to learn what your audience books, with no supplier contracts. Once you know your lane, a broker model gives you your own brand, prices and customer relationship.
What margins do car rental brokers work with?
There is no reliable public figure; it depends on destination, supplier terms and how much cover is included. Price the whole rental honestly and test.
