Toll
Also called road toll, toll road
The short answerA charge for using certain roads, bridges or tunnels; in a rental, often billed later by the rental company with a fee.
What it means
A toll is a fee for using a road, bridge or tunnel. Many tolls are now cashless: cameras or a tag record the car. With a rental, the toll operator bills the rental company, which charges you the toll plus an administration fee, unless you bought a toll pass or paid the toll yourself.
Why it matters
Toll admin fees can be larger than the tolls. Check how the rental company handles tolls in that country before you drive.
