Cross-border fee
Also called cross-border charge, foreign travel fee
The short answerA charge for taking the rental car into another country, where the rental company allows it.
What it means
A cross-border fee is charged when you take the rental car across a national border. It covers extra insurance and paperwork, and the risk of recovering the car abroad. Some countries are allowed with a fee, some only for certain car classes, and some not at all.
Why it matters
Crossing without permission can void your cover. Tell the rental company where you're going at booking, not after.
